BCECC Newsletter: Welcoming the Year of the Horse 2026

17/02/2026

Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, marks the beginning of a new lunar year and remains the most important traditional celebration in China and for Chinese communities worldwide. Chinese New Year 2026 brings the Year of the Horse, more specifically the Fire Horse, from 17 February 2026 to 5 February 2027. Celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, it is marked by a rich variety of cultural and social traditions. Beyond its cultural meaning, it is a moment of renewal. A time to reflect on the past year, reconnect with family and partners, and look ahead to new opportunities with optimism and confidence.

This year also marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of Belgium. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 25 October 1971 with Jacques Groothaert as the first Belgian Ambassador to China. In the context of this 55th anniversary various events will be organized later this year to promote Belgium-China relations, encouraging exchange and strengthening relations in various fields such as trade, education, science and technology, culture, etc.

Year of the Horse in Chinese zodiac tradition

In Chinese tradition, the Horse is a powerful symbol of strength, speed, freedom, and perseverance. Its important role in ancient China and its prominent place in the Chinese zodiac is rooted in history, as horses played an essential role in transportation, agriculture, and military life. Over time, the Horse became a cultural symbol of power, nobility and ambition, admired for its energy, endurance, and spirited character.

In the Chinese zodiac, each year is represented by one of twelve animals, each with its own unique meaning, and the Horse is particularly celebrated for its qualities. Admired for endurance and loyalty, the Horse represents vitality, independence, and a pioneering spirit. People born in the Year of the Horse are often known for their energy, optimism, and proactive nature. The Horse also symbolizes progress and momentum, always moving forward and exploring new paths. These qualities define the dynamic and confident spirit traditionally associated with a Horse year.

Outlook and business spirit for 2026

Because of its energetic and forward-moving spirit, the Year of the Horse brings a faster and more active pace. In 2026, this could mean taking the first steps on projects that were planned in the previous year, making ambitious decisions in work or personal life, and actively reaching out to reconnect with friends or expand networks. In general, activities or plans that seemed slow or on hold in 2025 likely to gain momentum in 2026. This year will encourage initiative, creativity, and action, offering a chance to move forward and make the most of new beginnings. 2026 will reward those who dare to innovate and turn their ideas into meaningful accomplishments. From a business perspective, the Horse represents entrepreneurship, ambition, and the drive to explore new markets. It supports initiative, trust and collaboration, all key elements for successful international partnerships.

Chinese New Year celebrations in Belgium

Chinese New Year is actively celebrated in Belgium by Chinese communities with family gatherings, festive meals and traditional ceremonies. Over the years, Chinese New Year has also become an increasingly visible public celebration in Belgium. Through cultural events, community initiatives, and networking events, Spring Festival is experienced as a shared moment of exchange that brings together Chinese communities, Belgian partners, institutions, and the wider public.

In Brussels, celebrations typically include Chinese New Year receptions and networking events hosted by business organizations and institutions. These events usually take place in the weeks following Chinese New Year and provide valuable opportunities for intercultural dialogue and professional exchange.

Antwerp, home to one of the largest Chinese communities in Belgium, presents particularly vibrant celebrations. Each year, celebrations feature traditional lion and dragon dances in and around Antwerp’s Chinatown, attracting a broad audience of locals and visitors. These celebrations are often complemented by temple ceremonies and community events, where families come together to welcome the New Year according to the tradition.

Beyond Brussels and Antwerp, local Chinese New Year activities are also organized in smaller cities across Belgium. Cultural associations, schools and communities contribute to these celebrations, reflecting the geographic spread and diversity of the Chinese community nationwide.

In light of the Year of the Horse, the Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCECC) will also celebrate this important occasion with a Chinese New Year cocktail reception on 26 February, held at the Cercle Royal Gaulois Artistique & Littéraire in Brussels. This event will bring together members, partners and stakeholders from both the Belgian and Chinese business communities to celebrate the New Year in a setting that combines tradition, dialogue and networking.

Belgium-China connections in the New Year

As Belgium and China continue to strengthen their economic and cultural ties, the spirit of the Horse offers a meaningful metaphor for collaboration. Strong partnerships are built on trust, dialogue, and a shared commitment to progress. By fostering mutual understanding and long-term engagement, Belgian and Chinese companies can continue to explore new opportunities across sectors. This ongoing exchange not only deepens bilateral relations but also contributes to broader international cooperation and shared prosperity.

The Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCECC) remains dedicated to supporting this dialogue and acting as a bridge between both countries, encouraging sustainable growth and meaningful exchange. Please contact us for more information or guidance.
