BCECC Newsletter: The importance of work-life balance in Belgium

16/06/2025

Belgium has established itself as a global leader in work-life balance, making it an attractive destination for international businesses. A strong social security system and progressive labor policies ensure that employees enjoy a well-balanced lifestyle, which in turn fosters productivity and job satisfaction. For Chinese companies looking to expand into Europe, understanding Belgium’s work culture is essential for building a sustainable and successful business.

According to the OECD Better Life Index, Belgium consistently ranks among the top countries for work-life balance. Full-time employees dedicate an average of 15.5 hours per day to personal care and leisure, exceeding the OECD average of 15 hours. Additionally, a report by The Brussels Times awarded Belgium a score of 7.7 out of 10 for work-life balance, further highlighting the country’s commitment to employee well-being.

A well-balanced work culture not only benefits individuals but also enhances workplace efficiency. Employees who can disconnect from work and enjoy personal time return more focused and motivated, contributing to higher productivity. This is a crucial insight for Chinese businesses, as it demonstrates that prioritizing employee well-being can lead to long-term business success.

Policies and social benefits supporting work-life balance

Belgium’s emphasis on work-life balance is reinforced by progressive labor policies and a comprehensive social security system. Key policies include:

The compressed workweek: Employees can condense their working hours into fewer days, allowing for extended time off without sacrificing income.

The right to disconnect: Employees are legally protected from being contacted outside of working hours, ensuring clear boundaries between work and personal life.

Flexible work arrangements: Many Belgian companies offer adjustable hours and remote work options, allowing employees to better manage personal and family responsibilities.

Beyond workplace policies, Belgium’s strong social security system provides financial security through healthcare, paid leave, and pension schemes. These benefits give employees peace of mind, allowing them to focus on both their professional and personal lives without financial stress.

Challenges in work-life balance

Despite Belgium’s strengths, challenges remain, particularly for working parents. A recent survey found that 70% of Belgian parents struggle to balance childcare with their careers, highlighting the need for further support in this area. Although Belgium offers subsidized childcare, the demand frequently outpaces the available supply, leaving many parents unable to secure a spot for their children. In addition, the scheduling of many schools does not align with typical working hours, forcing parents to arrange extra care during the gaps between school and work. These issues are key factors contributing to the difficulties Belgian parents experience in managing work and family life.

Additionally, while large multinational companies have embraced flexible work models, smaller businesses in Belgium often follow more traditional office-based structures. This variation means that not all employees experience the same level of work-life balance, depending on their industry and employer.

And finally, the strong emphasis on achieving a healthy work-life balance in Belgium, combined with the high degree of employee loyalty, often encourages workers to seek employment opportunities near their place of residence. While this preference supports personal well-being and long-term commitment to employers, it also contributes to a notable lack of geographical mobility in the labor market. As a result, companies may face challenges in attracting the right talent from broader regions, which can limit diversity in thought, reduce exposure to new ideas, and ultimately impact innovation and flexibility within organizations.
