A recent China Daily article reports on the inaugural meeting of the China-EU Trade and Investment Consultation Mechanism. During the inaugural meeting in Brussels, both sides agreed to establish a joint monitoring mechanism to improve transparency, enhance mutual trust, and facilitate the management of trade-related challenges.
The consultation mechanism will focus on four initial areas of cooperation: trade and investment balancing, export controls, intellectual property rights, and the reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Both parties also reaffirmed the importance of maintaining dialogue on critical materials and strengthening cooperation within the multilateral trading system.
Commenting on the development, BCECC Chairman Bernard Dewit emphasized that continued engagement between China and the European Union creates opportunities to address shared challenges through dialogue and to explore cooperation in areas such as the green transition, digitalization, and advanced manufacturing. He noted that the global business community benefits when major economies pursue pragmatic cooperation and maintain open channels of communication.
As China and the EU prepare for a follow-up ministerial meeting later this year, the launch of this consultation mechanism reflects a shared commitment to constructive engagement and stable economic relations.
